British-based Aussie expatriate Billy McConnell will compete as a wildcard in the opening round of the 2014 Supersport World Championship at Phillip Island from February 21-23.
The 27-year-old will ride for his Gloucester-based British supersport team on a factory-backed Triumph Daytona 675R, where he will be joined by Graeme Gowland. The meeting will kickstart the Smiths Triumph Racing Team’s preparation to win back the British Supersport Championship it relinquished last year.
"We've been thinking about doing the Phillip Island race for a while and now it's all come together really quickly,” said McConnell. “I'm pumped to be racing at home but it'll be tough without the traction control.
“I've ridden in WSS on the Triumph so I know what to expect so I'll just have to hang it out a bit when the tyre goes and hope for the best. I'm deadly serious about winning the British championship this year and this is an ideal way to start our preparations."
McConnell has been a regular in British racing since 2006, finishing in the top three of the supersport title in four of the last five seasons. In 2013, he competed as a wildcard in both the Silverstone and Donington rounds of WSS, and crossed the line in 22nd and 19th. A year earlier, he was ninth in the Donington round.
