Despite carrying a hand injury after a crash during practice, Yamaha rider Wayne Maxwell showed strength and determination to claim the overall win in round four of the 2016 Australian Superbike Championship at Barbagallo Raceway in Perth from June 3-5.
Maxwell went 2-1 across the two 20-lap races to finish ahead of Ducati's Mike Jones (1-3) and Yamaha teammate Glenn Allerton (3-2).
Despite the win on the YZF-R1M, 33-year-old Maxwell said it had been a challenging weekend.
“I couldn’t get a feel for the bike and couldn’t get a direction,” said Maxwell. "But we just went back to basics and went up and down with the bike and in the end we made the right decision and it paid off.
"Barbagallo was one of the tracks that I was unsure about, and didn't know whether I could go with the likes of Mike (Jones) and Glenn (Allerton), so to get a race win and to turn everything around after a crash on Thursday feels awesome.
"We have an awesome tight crew with the Yamaha team, and to come away with a win feels awesome. To do it in front of such a big crowd and to be a part of such a great championship feels fantastic."
Daniel Falzon (Yamaha, 5-4) continued an impressive rookie season with fourth overall from Troy Herfoss (Honda, 4-5) and Cru Halliday (Yamaha, 7-6).
Maxwell now leads the championship on 176pts from Allerton (171), Herfoss (158), Jones (137) and Ben Burke (Kawasaki, 114).
