Team Suzuki’s Wayne Maxwell claimed debut victory aboard the GSX-R1000 at Phillip Island’s ‘WSBK Cup’ from February 22-24, a non-championship event on the Australian Superbike domestic schedule in 2013.
Saturday saw Maxwell dominate the opening 12-lap race, leading from flag-to-flag with a comfortable 4.796-second victory.
That form then carried through into Sunday, as he set a best lap of 1:33.073 en route to a clean sweep, again defeating Chas Hern (Suzuki) and Linden Magee (BMW).
“To start from pole position and win the opening race is an ideal situation for all of us at Team Suzuki and I’m really happy about that,” Maxwell said.
“This weekend was a nice way to race the Suzuki GSX-R1000 for the first time without the pressure of championship points on the line, just starting off with another few days to get comfortable and work closely with the team in race conditions.”
In the Prostock championship, Kawasaki’s Matt Walters also won both races on his ZX-10R, and in Supersport Aaron Morris and Daniel Falzon won a race apiece, with Chris Quinn second in both of them.
The Australian Superbike Championship will officially commence at Symmons Plains in Tasmania from April 5-7, where Maxwell will have a lot more on his plate with Josh Hook (Honda), Glenn Allerton (BMW) and Jamie Stauffer (Honda) all returning to domestic competition after being on world championship wildcard duty at Phillip Island.
