Team Honda Racing’s Wayne Maxwell overcame some final round flutters to win the 2014 Swann Insurance Australasian Superbike Championship at Sydney Motorsport Park on Sunday, November 23.
Maxwell posted an eighth, fifth and fifth from his three races to finish the series 7pts ahead of experienced teammate Jamie Stauffer (1-7-3).
Troy Herfoss made it a Team Honda Racing trifecta, finishing the championship in third place.
The three races at the Sydney Motorsport Park finale were won by Stauffer, privateer Mike Jones (Kawasaki) and Josh Hook (Honda), while Maxwell played it smart – his bullocking work in the earlier rounds allowing him to adopt a more careful approach in the run home.
Maxwell finished the series on 362pts, from Stauffer (355) and Herfoss (324).
“This season has been fantastic with Team Honda Racing," said Maxwell. "After riding for the team for many years and being so close before but never quite getting there, it makes winning the Australasian Superbike Championship so special.
"To have a year away from Honda and then for Paul and Laura to take me back and to win with them is an amazing feeling. I would like to thank Honda, Motul and all the team partners. Also, Bell, Milspec, Mick Price Horse Training, Bullseye Electrics, Shotz, MotoSpec Chassis, Speed Angle and Champions Ride Days. The support this year has been amazing.”
Glenn Allerton (314) completed the championship in fourth, his privateer BMW team now set to pull up stumps and leaving the hard-charging New South Welshman looking for a new seat in 2015.
But Allerton is not alone: the majority of his contemporaries are also yet to announce their plans for 2015, and at the broader level the Australasian Superbike Championship will again sit on the local calendar alongside the Motorcycling Australia-sanctioned Australian Superbike Championship.
Meanwhile, Hook (263) was fifth in the championship from the first of the factory Yamahas of Cru Halliday (258).
In supersport, Aiden Wagner won all three races to be crowned Australasian champion from Aaron Morris and Callum Spriggs, the trio all Yamaha mounted.
