Yamaha will have the No. 1 plate on its all-new YZF-R1M in the 2015 Australasian Superbike Championship (ASC), with reigning champion Wayne Maxwell defecting from Honda to join the Brisbane-based team.
Maxwell, 32, is one of two new riders in the Yamaha Racing Team (YRT) for 2015, with reigning Australian superbike champion the other. Cru Halliday remains with the team, while Robbie Bugden and Rick Olson have lost their seats.
Maxwell, Allerton and Halliday will contest the six-round ASC, as well as the support races at the Phillip Island world superbike and MotoGP rounds.
Maxwell won the 2014 ASC for Honda, but he’s no stranger to Yamaha having competed in selected world endurance events for Yamaha Austria Racing Team this year.
“My decision to come to Yamaha was an easy one as the team produces a great bike, has a good atmosphere and is at the races to win,” Maxwell said. “The new R1 sounds awesome and it’s an honour to be a selected rider to represent such an important bike.
“My goal is to retain the No. 1 plate and I believe I have the team and the bike behind me to do that.”
Meanwhile, Allerton’s 2014 saw him win the Australian Superbike Championship and finish fourth in the ASC, both times on a BMW S 1000 RR. His year also included knee surgery but he finished the year out strongly regaining full speed and fitness.
“I have worked with John, Kevin and the YRT team in the past and know just how professional and dedicated the effort is. Yamaha has long been seen as the benchmark in Australia and now armed with a new R1, I think we are all in for an exciting season,” said Allerton. “I’m 100 per cent fit and ready to challenge for the 2015 championship. I’m really happy to be with Yamaha and my goal is to get the No. 1 plate on my R1.”
Maxwell's former employer, Team Honda, is yet to announce its plans for 2015, but Josh Hook, Jamie Stauffer and Troy Herfoss are expected to remain in the picture.
