French rider Maxime Berger got more than he bargained for at the recent Donington (UK) round of the Superbike World Championship (Sunday, March 27), when the rear wheel of his Supersonic Ducati simply fell off.
Berger was exiting the British track's Goddards hairpin onto the start/finish line straight on lap six of race one when the bizarre incident occurred, the unexpected departure of his wheel unsurpringly causing the rider to crash.
Berger escaped the resulting fall unharmed, the spill later blamed on a defective rim.
The Supersonic Ducati team's run of bad luck continued in the second race, when Berger was forced to retire with a broken clutch. "I'm disappointed and incredulous," Berger later said. "I've never had to stop twice for two such strange reasons," he added.
To view what would have to be one of the most unusual world Superbike spills in years, see the footage below.
Berger later thanked his team for doing "a great job here at Donington", but you'd have to think there were at least a few terse words thrown about behind the closed doors of the Supersonic Ducati pit garage!
