Understandably, the Matchless X Reloaded took most of the nostalgia vote at the recent EICMA show in Milan, as it made its public debut with a faithful rendition of the model which was such a big part of the company’s heritage in the 1930s. A British vibe, although ownership is now in Italian hands.
Retro it may be, but take a good look and it’s very much the modern practitioner, with a six-speed gearbox married to a towering 1916cc S&S V-twin that’s good for around 100hp (101ps/74.6kW) and producing the torque you’d expect from such a hefty lump – 157Nm. The sound is alright too, we’re told. The original Matchless X had a 990cc v-twin.
There are twin shock absorbers, stealthy placed under the seat, and the brakes appear to have plenty of chutzpah – 18 pistons all up, with 12 at the front and six at the rear.
Riders can choose between cruiser-like forward controls or ones promoting a more classic sit-up stance. There’s plenty of height adjustment on the bars (250mm), and the seat can be adjusted between 740 and 800mm.
Matchless is now owned by Italian Franco Malenotti. His team a EICMA didn’t go into too much detail about future plans – public reaction at EICMA will produce a clearer picture - but even if production is given the green light we’re not going to be flushed with units – and it’s unlikely any will make it to Australia in the forseeable future.
