Aussie Troy Bayliss finished 10th in in the invitational Superprestigio dirt track event in Barcelona’s Palau Sant Jordi stadium on Saturday, December 13, with the honours going to reigning MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez.
Marquez not only won the Superprestigio class, reserved for road racing stars, but also the 12-lap Superfinal, which pitted the top four riders from Superprestigio and Open (dirt track heavyweights) in a winner-takes-all battle.
Marquez beat Open winner Jared Mees, an AMA dirt track star, in the Superfinal by 0.3 seconds, with the pair clearly the fastest riders on the tiny 200-metre oval circuit – lap times took about 12 seconds – all night. Spanish-based American Kenny Noyes completed the podium, after earlier having to make his way through the last chance qualifier just to make the Superprestigio class finals.
Bayliss was fifth in his last chance qualifier to make the Superprestigio finals, but was baulked just after the start when his compatriot Remy Gardner got caught up with another rider. Bayliss returned later to finish second behind Toni Elias in the race-off for the final positions down the order, which equated to 10th position overall.
Meanwhile, the top eight in the Superfinal was rounded out by Spaniards Gerald Bailo and Dani Ribalta, Britons Oliver Brindley and Bradley Smith (Smith having won two of his earlier heats) and Frenchman Adrian Chareyre.
American Brad Baker (2013 AMA Grand National winner), who won the first Superfinal earlier this year, was ruled out of action earlier in the day, having dislocated his left shoulder in a practice crash.
