In front of what’s claimed to be the biggest crowd in freestyle motocross history – 100,000 spectators – Australia’s Robbie Maddison finished second at round two of the Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour in Brazil on May 28.
American Nate Adams brought up his fourth X-Fighters victory at the “Esplanada dos Ministerios“ in the heart of Brasilia, with his bag of tricks just too much for Maddison. Norwegian Andre Villa was third, with the second Australian, Blake Williams, eighth out of 11 riders in the invitational event.
“I’ve never seen so many people in one spot before. I’m just speechless,” said 27-year-old Adams, a neighbour of Maddison in California.
The giant kickers and the enormous crowd caught some of the riders out. Villa was forced to dismount from his bike in the semi-final, the same fate that befell 19-year-old New Zealander Levi Sherwood, who was fourth.
The remaining stops in X-Fighters are Rome (June 24), Madrid (July 15), Warsaw (August 6) and Sydney (September 17) – with the exact venue in Australia’s largest city still remaining a closely guarded secret.
Final results Brasilia: 1. Nate Adams (USA), 2. Robbie Maddison (USA), 3. Andre Villa (NOR), 4. Levi Sherwood (AUS), 5. Eigo Sato (JAP), 6. Javier Villegas (CHI), 7. Adam Jones (USA), 8. Blake Williams (AUS), 9. Beau Bamburg (USA), 10. Gilles Dejong (BEL), 11. Gilmar Flores (BRA).
Overall standings (after two of six events): 1. Adams 165, 2. Villa 145, 3. Maddison 110.
