Maddo magic in Madrid

Robbie Maddison pulled out a new move, the Volt Body Varial, to win round four of the X-fighters in Spain

Australian FMX sensation Robbie 'Maddo' Maddison has scored his first win of the 2010 season in Spain at the Red Bull X-Fighters FMX competition.

Slotting into second place on the overall championship standings – after pulling out a brand-new trick – Maddo proved a point in front of 25,000 spectators at Madrid's famous bullfighting ring.

The new move saw the Australian freestyle motocross rider perform one full rotation of his body over the bike, while sailing 15 metres above the ground. He landed the trick without any major issues and was clearly stoked with his performance.

"The Volt Body Varial definitely helped me win," explained the ecstatic Australian, adding: "I still can't believe it!"

"I've been working on the trick since Moscow," revealed Maddo, "because I knew I had to bring something bigger if I wanted to win.

"I've been mentally visualising it since arriving in Madrid, and I read a book about mental preparation on my way home from Moscow because I had to bring my mental awareness level up." This interesting approach worked because Maddison landed all three Volts he attempted.

With Maddo in first, the podium was filled out by Swiss rider Mat Rebeaud in second and Andrè Villa of Norway in third. New Zealand's Levi Sherwood took out fifth place while Aussies Jackson Strong and Cam Sinclair took out 10th and 11th spots respectively.

Looking at the podium, second place was an especially impressive feat for Swiss-based Rebeaud, having bested local favourite (and 2009 winner) Dany Torres in the Semi-Finals.

Nevertheless, Torres was the consummate sportsman, telling the gathered media that Maddo deserved the win: "The atmosphere here is just insane. Next year I'll be back to take revenge, but Maddison deserved to win here tonight. Thank you to all the fans."

Norwegian rider Villa still maintains an overall lead in the championship, but Robbie Maddison is closing in on him.

With a 45-point lead over Maddison after four rounds, Villa said: "I've got to stay consistent and finish on the podium in London and at the season finale in Rome. If I manage to do that then nothing can stand between me and the overall title."

The next and fifth round of the Red Bull X-Fighters championship will take place in London on August 14, as all eyes turn to the Maddo vs Villa show.

Red Bull X-Fighters overall standings (after four events):

1. André Villa (NOR) 310 points
2. Robbie Maddison (AUS) 265 points
3. Nate Adams (USA) 225 points
4. Levi Sherwood (NZL) 220 points
5. Adam Jones (USA) 190 poins
