Yamaha’s Billy Mackenzie has starred in the treacherous sands of Western Australian to claim his first overall win in the 2014 2014 Monster Energy MX Nationals as the championship hit the halfway mark.
Mackenzie’s consistency (first, second and fourth from his three races) in the MX1 class handed him the spoils over siblings Matt Moss (Suzuki) and Jake Moss (Kawasaki). KTM’s Kirk Gibbs and Adam Monea (Kawasaki) finished in fourth and fifth overall.
“It’s nice to finally get a round victory,” Mackenzie said. “I could feel it building over the last few rounds, starting at Wonthaggi, then Murray Bridge was better and now the win here.
“It’s a good way to go into the break, as we leave here positive, the team gets a reward for their work and I have a lot of motivation to keep the work up over the next few months. I need to improve on my fifth place in the championship and if I keep riding like I have been, I’m sure the results will continue.”
In the overall championship standings, Matt Moss has moved 22 points clear of Gibbs --389 to 367 -- while Jake Moss (343) has inched into third place over Monea (342). Mackenzie is fifth on 337.
In the MX2 class, 17-year-old privateer Caleb Ward continued his great form, managing two wins and a third place to claim the overall and move into seventh place in the standings.
Round four winner and Husqvarna rider Luke Arbon (4-5-1) was second overall from Josh Cachia (Honda, 8-4-2). Luke Clout (Yamaha) continues to lead the championship.
The MX Nationals now takes a five-week break before round six in Swan Hill (Vic) on June 29.
