MA and FIM tackle concussion issue

Medical experts, riders and industry people come together in groundbreaking concussion summit

Motorcycling Australia and FIM Oceania will team up to tackle the issue of concussion and improve rider safety. The organisations have agreed to develop a Concussion Working Group, establish education programs, create rider ambassadors and develop guidelines for the Oceania region.

The Concussion Working Group will work closely with FIM Medical Commission and the federations of the Oceania region to develop polices to improve rider safety across all disciplines.

The initiatives were proposed during the inaugural MA and FIM Oceania Concussion Summit. The Summit welcomed 14 invitees, including Dr Brent May, Dr Greg Harris and Dr Michael Thumm, three of the world’s most experienced motorsport doctors. Also in attendance were former and current professional riders, event promoters, MA and Motorcycling NZ personnel and FIM Medical Director, Dr David McManus.

“This was a crucial first meeting for MA on a very complex issue,” said MA CEO, Peter Doyle. “It was important to have concussion experts, riders, promoters and industry people in the room to develop guidelines and policies for our sport going forward.”

Concussion has been a major talking point for many sporting organisations around world in recent years, as more research is undertaken to improve safety for athletes.
