Luke George has announced his shock retirement from professional motocross, in a career that has spanned the absolute highs and lows of racing.
There have been many highlights, including the 2008 Australian Lites motocross title to add to his five national-level junior successes. George also had the opportunity to compete against the world’s best when he scored a ride at a 2009 round of the AMA motocross title.
But in late 2009 his world came crashing down when he nearly died in a crash during the final round of the Australian Motocross Championship in Coolum (Qld).
After waking from a week-long coma, George immediately focused on getting better and stunned doctors and physicians as he healed much quicker than anybody anticipated – save for Luke. Unbelievably George was able to return to such a level of health where he was not only able to race again, but race competitively.
But he’s now decided to call time on his career, just a year out of his teens.
“I’m sure this will come as a big surprise to many, but it’s time for me to focus on the next stage of my life,” said George. “I’m not sad in any way; I’m very content and happy but I feel in my gut that it’s time to retire. I want to focus on the next stage of my life while I’m still young and able to give it 110 per cent.
George finished 10th in this year’s Lites motocross title, and his last race meeting was a crash-marred effort in the second round of Super X in Canberra last Saturday.
George’s retirement is effective immediately.
