Lowes to replace Smith at Silverstone and Misano

Yamaha's WorldSBK rider will make his debut in the premier class of road racing to replace his injured countryman

PATA Yamaha Official WorldSBK Team rider Alex Lowes will replace Bradley Smith in the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 MotoGP team for the next two back-to-back rounds at Silverstone (September 4) and Misano (September 11).

Smith crashed in practice for the Oschersleben eight-hour world endurance last weekend that left the British rider with an injured thigh. Initially fearing a break, it was later confirmed that there was no fracture, but Smith underwent surgery on the laceration. He has also sustained ligament damage.

Lowes recently tested the Yamaha MotoGP machine at Brno, with the Brit now given the opportunity in the MotoGP ranks as a reward for his win for Yamaha in July's Suzuka 8-Hour world endurance race alongside Tech 3's Pol Espargaro and Japan's Katsuyuki Nakasuga.

Lowes will join his brother Sam Lowes (Federal Oil Gresini Moto2) in the MotoGP paddock.
