According to a report published recently in British newspaper The London Evening Standard, London's Westminster City Council is set to open up a large portion of central London's bus lanes to motorcyclists, in a trial that it hopes will help ease the city's traffic congestion woes.
London's motorcyclists have been able to use a small selection of bus lanes and designated 'Red Routes' (high-volume arterials) for the past three years - a scheme that, according to a recent study conducted by Transport for London (TfL), has resulted a 20 per cent improvement in traffic flow for motorcyclists without any adverse impact on bus travel.
Now Westminster City Council will launch a pilot scheme that allows motorcyclists to use a far greater number of central London's bus lanes; if the trial proves successful, it could well lead to permanent access to bus lanes for London's riders.
Speaking with The London Evening Standard, Councillor Lee Rowley said there was a pressing need for London's transport policy to reflect the city's growing number of scooter and motorcycle riders. "With the use of scooters rising by over 11 per cent in 2011, it is important that the council takes action to help two-wheeled road users get around the capital safely,” she said.
