
Motorcycle, all-terrain vehicle (ATV) and scooter sales have risen almost 0.8 per cent in 2013, with 79,949 sales from January to September compared to 79,302 at the same time in 2012.

The off-road and road segments have grown 10.7 per cent and 0.8 per cent in that time, while ATV (down 7.7 per cent) and scooter (down 11.9 per cent) sales have taken heavy hits. Road is still far and away the biggest segment, accounting for 39.3 per cent of overall sales.
Honda remains No. 1 in marque across the board, and how holds 21.6 per cent market share in Australia, ahead of Yamaha (17.7), Kawasaki (10.6), Suzuki (9.6) and Harley-Davidson (7.2). The balance of the top 10 is KTM (6.3 per cent), Polaris (3.6), Triumph (2.7), CF Moto (2.3) and BMW Motorrad (2.1).
The introduction of the three 500cc Hondas – CB500R, CBR500R and CB500X – earlier this year has been a huge help for the Japanese giant, which has sold a combined total of 1482 since that time.
Still, Honda’s sales have actually dipped in 2013 by 1.4 per cent, and others to go backwards include Suzuki (down 11.6), Aprilia (down 17.7), Hyosung (down 30.9), Moto Guzzi (down 21.7), Triumph (down 0.2) and SYM (down 22.2). Individually, Kawasaki’s Ninja 300 (pictured) is the darling of Australian motorcycle consumers, with 2732 sold so far in 2013, streets ahead of the Yamaha WR450F (1373), followed by the Honda CT110X (1251), Honda CRF50F (1230) and CBR500R (1042). Seven of the top 10 road bikes are LAMS models.
