Releasing a new platform is an exciting time for any manufacturer, and for Indian Motorcycle that will come this Saturday, May 4, at the international launch for its pair of all-new street-based flat trackers – the FTR 1200 and FTR 1200 S.
Bikesales will be on location for the launch, which will begin in the tourist mecca of Santa Monica before cruising down the coast and then onto the canyons above Malibu. So we’ll get a feel for all facets of the FTRs, from stability to agility, comfort and slow-speed manners. Should be a day to remember – in forecast perfect conditions, too.
The bikes, which will go on sale locally by the end of May 2019, take design and styling cues from the firm’s all-conquering FTR 750 purpose-built flat track racer and the one-off FTR 1200 Custom.
The bikes are powered by an all-new 1203cc V-twin engine, with the liquid-cooled unit good for a claimed 120hp and 115Nm.
All models come with full LED lighting, power-assist slipper clutch, cruise control, antilock brakes and a fast-charge USB port, while the FTR 1200 S adds fully adjustable suspension front and rear, a 4.3-inch LCD colour touchscreen, traction control, cornering stability control, wheelie control and a choice of three ride modes: Standard, Sport, and Rain.
The 60-degree V-twin is housed in a tubular-steel trellis frame with aluminium subframe, while the pair ride on an inverted 43mm fork and rear monoshock. Claimed dry weight is 221kg for the FTR 1200 and 222kg for the FTR1200 S, while both sport a 13-litre tank.
Pricing has already been announced for Australia: the FTR 1200 will be available in Thunder Black for $19,995 rideaway; the FTR 1200 S in Indian Motorcycle Red/Steel Gray or Titanium Metallic/Thunder Black liveries will be $22,995 rideaway; and the FTR 1200 S Race Replica for $24,995 – the latter with an Akrapovic low-mount exhaust as standard.
