Zero Motorcycles has confirmed LAMS approval for a couple of its electric models.
The Australian LAMS (Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme) rules restrict learner riders to motorcycles under 660cc and to certain power-to-weight requirements, but the regulations surrounding electric motorcycles are a little more blurry.
But Zero will offer its 2023 S and DS models with LAMS approval and price tags of just $13,200 ride away. Considering the 2024 S non-LAMS model checks in at $30,500 ride away, the price for the new learner-friendly models is a bargain.
“We are excited to bring our innovative electric motorcycles to a wider audience of Australian riders,” said Chris Walton, Zero Motorcycles Australia GM. “The LAMS approval for our models is a significant step forward in making electric motorcycling accessible to new riders.”
The catch is that not all states are on board, with only ACT, Queensland, and Victoria recognising the LAMS status of Zero models.
In Victoria, all EV bikes are eligible for LAMS consideration, however Zero has opted to submit approval requests for the S and DS models, as well as the S Plus, DS Plus, FX and FXE models. The 2024 S, DS, FX, and FXE have also been submitted for approval.
The ACT and Queensland are in similar positions to Victoria, however New South Wales has a 25kW limit on all electric motorcycles for LAMS approval, regardless of kW/tonne figures. Western Australia, South Australia, and Tasmania follow the NSW rules, meaning no Zero models will gain LAMS status in those states.
Zero also opted not to submit LAMS requests in the Northen Territory, presumably because of the lack of suitable charging infrastructure.
