First revealed at the EICMA motorcycle expo in Milan, Italy, in November of 2012, we’re now just a few weeks away from the international media launch of what promises to be one of the most insane naked bikes we’ve seen in years: KTM’s 1290 Super Duke R.
When the curtain went up in Milan the onlookers were stunned by the prototype before them. It was unmistakeably KTM and unmistakeably a Super Duke – just one pumped full of steroids and simply itching for a fight!
Only very limited details were provided for the prototype 1290 Super Duke R back then, but now we have a little bit more. At its heart beats a rebored, 1301cc V-twin taken from the RC8 R superbike, with claimed power of 180hp (132kW) at 8850rpm, and 144N of torque -- 120 of which is available from 100NM.
The engine is gripped by a chromoly frame in turn suspended by premium-spec WP suspension, the entire plot slowed by top-shelf Brembo stoppers.
All the electronics are there, too: traction control, linked anti-lock braking, selectable ride modes, and more. This is one bike where most mere mortals will be relieved to have the assistance.
The 1290 Super Duke R is the paternal head in KTM's populous naked bike clan, which currently comprises the 990 Super Duke R, 690 Duke R, 690 Duke, 390 Duke, 200 Duke and 125 Duke. There's no risk of teenage rebellion in this family!
Duke range in Bike Showroom
The international media launch of the 1290 Super Duke R will be held over October 18-20 in southern Spain and Bikesales Network will be there. A ride along the sinuous coastal roads that hug the Mediterranean will be backed up by a session at the serpentine Ascari race circuit in the hills of Andalusia. We’ll bring you a full rundown on the bike following the launch but, in the meantime, here’s a teaser to whet your appetite…
