KTM eyes Moto2 with WP-developed racebike

The Austrian brand has its sights set on all three MotoGP categories
A Moto2 racebike developed by WP with the help of KTM made its debut at Spain’s Almeria Circuit last week, a move which will eventually see the Austrian manufacturer with a presence in all three classes of the MotoGP World Championship.
Best known for its high-end suspension, WP Performance Systems sits under the same ownership umbrella as KTM and is responsible for the chassis as well as many components used in both KTM’s Moto3 teams and Red Bull Rookies Cup machinery. More recently it has also developed the frame as well as componentry for the Austrian brand’s anticipated MotoGP project.
The WP Racing Department is no stranger to world championship racing, currently servicing over 30 teams competing across many genres, including Toby Price’s Dakar-winning Red Bull KTM Factory rally team. The recently unveiled Moto2 project represents the first time the firm will develop and build a world championship racebike from the ground up.
"The Moto2 project has a great significance for us," both brands’ CEO Stefan Pierer said. "Through our growth and long-term investments we are in a position to close this final gap in our activities in the sport of Grand Prix road racing.

"A young rider can gather his first experience in the Rookies Cup and then advance to our own in-house Moto3 team, then further, via the new Moto2 project into the MotoGP class. These are concepts that have repeatedly proved to be successful for KTM and WP in professional racing, and in the future we want to have riders for our MotoGP project that have advanced right through the entire KTM Academy."
