KTM dominates Super X mud bath

A copious amount of rain in Melbourne turned the track into a slush pit, with KTM riders Tye Simmonds and Matt Moss making the best of the conditions

In incredibly wet and unceremonious conditions, KTM duo Tye Simmonds (Open) and Matt Moss (Lites) emerged with the spoils in the opening round of the Monster Energy Super X title at Melbourne Knights Stadium on October 22.

The Open format was trimmed back to one 12-lap final because of the horrendous conditions – fuelled by a number of downpours throughout the day – with 19-year-old Simmonds taking the win ahead of early leader Billy Mackenzie (Kawasaki) and Ryan Marmont (KTM).

Cheyne Boyd (Honda) and Dan McCoy (Suzuki) rounded out the top five, with championship favourite Jay Marmont (Yamaha) eighth.

“It feels good to come here and do good, get the result that we were really hoping for,” Simmonds explained. “I really want to contend for the championship, try to be there week in, week out, and see where we end up.

“I just rode my own race, tried not to do anything silly and we ended up getting the W. I’m excited right now and have to say thanks to the whole JDR Motorex KTM team.”

In the double header finale for the Lites class, Kawasaki’s Dean Ferris easily won the first race from Moss and Josh Cachia (KTM).

Race two was shaping as another Ferris benefit before he crashed mid-race, with Moss the main benefactor, with Luke Styke (Yamaha) and Brendan Harrison (KTM) second and third.

Ferris climbed his way back to third after his first off, but then crashed again just before the finish line and had troubles starting his bike. He crossed the line in 10th.

“I had to make my way through the pack in the first final, which was tough but the second final went much better and it’s great to get the win,” said Moss.

“The bike is running really good and I felt great out there. It was tough conditions tonight, but I am glad we could put a good show on for the crowd.”

Errol Willis (Suzuki) won the Under 19’s opener.

Round two of the Australasian Supercross Championship will take place at WIN Stadium in Wollongong (NSW) on Saturday, October 29.
