KTM has relaunched the SMT adventure sport model with a retuned version of the proven 889cc LC8c parallel-twin engine platform.
First teased in February, the 2023 KTM 890 SMT revives the concept started with the KTM 990 SMT that was launched in 2009 and discontinued in 2013.
The new 890 SMT is based heavily on the KTM 890 Adventure, but includes revised geometry and ergonomics for supermoto-like performance. The changes included a slimmed-down fuel tank, a single-piece ‘Supermoto’ seat, and tighter geometry on the chromoly steel frame.
Also featured on the KTM 890 SMT is fully-adjustable WP Apex suspension with 43mm open cartridge upside-down forks and 180mm of travel front and rear. Completing the supermoto-friendly changes are 17-inch wheels and Michelin PowerGP tyres.
Elsewhere, the 890 SMT also includes a 5-inch TFT screen and the same electronics package featured on the 890 Adventure. But the SMT also features Supermoto ABS and a Track mode option. A quickshifter and cruise control are also available as options.
To show off the capability of the new 890 SMT, KTM employed AMA Superbike racer and Pikes Peak winner, Chris Fillmore, to pilot the bike up a Sardinian mountain climb. Fillmore had previously notched a Pikes Peak record with the KTM 790 Duke motor.
The 2023 KTM 890 SMT is expected to arrive on Australian and New Zealand shores in July, but numbers will be “extremely limited”. Speak to your local KTM dealer for more information.
