Updated KTM 450 SMR looming

KTM has massaged its 450 supermoto to produce an even more finely tuned, precision track slayer...

KTM has revealed details of its 2023 KTM 450 SMR, the supermoto model boasting a revised chassis, a reworked single-cylinder engine and new suspension, capped off with a distinctive new colour scheme.

A lighter engine and a revised chassis and suspension package headline updates for the new 2023 KTM 450 SMR

Flex with feel

The updated model features a hydro-formed, laser-cut and robot-welded frame that has been refined for even greater sensitivity and performance, with altered rates of longitudinal and lateral flex delivering an even finer level of feedback.

Powering the show is a reworked 449cc SOHC single-cylinder engine said to produce 63hp. The unit features new cylinder internals and is tilted back in the frame for better mass centralisation, its output sprocket now 3mm lower.

A total weight saving of 500g means the engine weighs in at just 27kg, while it’s mated to a redesigned PANKL five-speed transmission and SUTER slipper clutch, while also fitted with a unidirectional quickshifter (upshifts only) as standard.

Needless to say, ground clearance isn't an issue!

Next-gen suspension

Allowing riders to make the most of the revised chassis and swingarm package is the latest generation WP XACT suspension, featuring a new WP XACT rear shock with revised mount and an AER 48mm inverted fork with split damping functions and tool-less adjustment.

The bike’s ergonomics have been tweaked to enhance the contact points between the bike and rider, while the new KTM 450 SMR doesn’t skimp on the smarts either, the bike equipped with traction control, launch control, and a choice of two customisable engine maps.

A touch of retro

A quality Brembo braking package and quality Metzeler Racetec SM K1 tyres ensures riders will wipe speed off with sublime efficiency and incredible feel. And the whole package is finished off beautifully in an orange and white scheme, with what KTM describes as a dash of 1990s purple in its KTM graphic.

While pricing for the new 2023 KTM 450 SMR is yet to be announced, KTM Australia says the new model will reach local dealerships in October 2022. But you’ll need to be quick to secure one: KTM Australia says the model will only be available in “extremely limited numbers”.
