The opening round of the 2009 FIM Veteran Motocross World Cup will be held in Italy this weekend and, while only one antipodean will compete, he's the real deal - New Zealander Darryll King.
Although retired form professional motocross these days, King has been working hard to get his body into shape for the six-round championship for over 40s, where he will attempt to wrest the No. 1 plate from Belgian Peter Iven.
"This is going to be an exciting year of racing against some of my old rivals once again," said King. "My greatest memories from racing the world championship were the people I met and the fantastic countries I visited. Racing the 500cc grands prix was an amazing experience."
King was second in the 1997-1998 world 500cc motocross titles, the first one behind his sibling, Shayne.
After quitting the world scene, King then raced for CDR Yamaha in Australia for seven years, and his record was outstanding - five top two finishes in the Pro Open title, including three wins.
King now runs motocross schools, including one on one coaching, and manages the Subway Yamaha team in New Zealand.
He wil ride a Yamaha in the Veteran World Cup.
