Ken Roczen successfully defended his WSX Championship title in front of a solid crowd at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium over the weekend.
Following rounds in Birmingham and Abu Dhabi, the Melbourne finale also saw Britain’s Max Anstie claim the SX2 world title.
It was the second year for both the WSX series and the Australian GP, with nearly 45,000 fans claimed to have filed through the turnstiles over two nights.
Germany’s Roczen entered the night with some work to do but was hard to beat across the night, with a 1-1-3 scorecard in the three-race WSX final.
Piloting a Pipes Motorsport Suzuki RM-Z450, Roczen easily won the first two races before finishing third in the final race to secure his second straight FIM Supercross World Championship.
Joey Savatgy, who entered the weekend with the title lead, finished second, while Firepower Honda’s Dean Wilson finished third after securing the Australian Supercross Championship the night before.
Anstie experienced similar dominance in the SX2 class, comfortably winning all three final races to take out the SX2 World Championship.
The WSX Championship has experienced something of a rollercoaster ride since its inception in 2022, with executives coming and going, and a change of investors resulting in significant scheduling changes.
However, the Australian promoter SX Global, which took over the FIM World Supercross Championship rights from AMA Supercross, seems intent on pushing on with its goal of building a truly-global supercross series. CEO Adam Bailey declared on social media that following the weekend’s racing, he is “back to work on 2024”.
