Kawasaki turns around its motorcycle business

After a recent loss, the Japanese company is back in the black, crediting the rise to increased sales in America as well as in emerging markets such as Thailand

Kawasaki has yet another profitable quarter from its Motorcycle & Engine business – a small part of the total Kawasaki Heavy industries operating pie -- with an operating income of 1.5 billion yen ($A16.4 million) for the three months ended December 31, 2013. The company credits the turnaround on increased sales in America (up to 80,000 units) and emerging markets like Thailand and Indonesia.

In the first three quarters of the 2013-2014 fiscal year, which ends in March, 2014, Kawasaki’s Motorcycle & Engine division earned a operating income of four billion yen ($A 43.8 million), compared to a loss of two billion yen ($A21.9 milli0n) over the same period the year before.
Net sales during those three quarters rose 34.1 percent to $A2.34 billion.

Across the whole Kawasaki Heavy Industries group, net sales of 920.8 billion yen ($A10.1 billion) were reported for the nine months ended December 31, 2013.

Kawasaki forecasts a strong fourth quarter, expecting year-end sales of 603,000 units from the Motorcycle & Engine division.
