Junior road racers get national cup status

Five-round series to flex their muscles

This year's Motorcycle Road Race Development Association (MRRDA) junior classes will have national cup status, Motorcycling Australia (MA) has announced.

"Over the last few years the MRRDA has strived to provide a solid platform for safe development of junior road racing," said the chairman of MRRDA, Paul Edwards. "The moves by MA to not only provide us with national cup status, but to also provide end-of-year awards is a sign of all our hard work paying off.

"I'd like to extend a big thank you to MA and to everyone involved in the MRRDA for their hard work which has made this possible."

National cup is one tier below 'championship' status, and will, for example, operate at the same level as the Superstock class did in the Australian Superbike Championship from 2002-2008 (it's now a championship class).

Outside of the MRRDA, juniors will also be on the support class program at the final round of the Woodstock Bourbon Australian Superbike Championship at Calder Park (Vic) from November 12-15.
