The Motorcycle Riders Association Victoria is planning a special awareness ride in Melbourne on Wednesday, July 7, with the outing reinforcing the message that motorcyclists are riders, not "stupid" and "hoons".
While the MRA flyer doesn't delve into specifics, there is currently widespread dismay among the Victorian motorcycle community following recent ill-advised comments made by the state's top traffic policeman, Ken Lay, which overshadowed the launch of the Victorian Labor government's on-road coaching trial for novice riders.
That program is funded by the "safety" levy and unanimously endorsed by the Victorian Motorcycle Advisory Council (VMAC), including Victoria Police.
The MRA urges all riders to come along and participate and demonstrate that motorcycle and scooter riders are not, as Mr Lay painted them, either stupid or hoons.
The awareness ride will go from North Wharf Road in the Docklands to Parliament House in Spring Street, with assembly at 4.00pm for a 4.30pm start.
All participants should note that this is a 'Ride to Rule' event and all road rules and police direction must be adhered to. High visibility vests will be available, to be returned after the event.
