Jones stars in New Zealand champs

Three wins from four stars

January 19, 2009

Aussie duo Gareth Jones and Robbie Bugden dominated the major classes in round two of the New Zealand Superbike Championship at Timaru last weekend.

The Yamaha-mounted Jones won both Supersport races, and then shared Superbike victories with defending champion, Bugden.

"I needed that," said Jones after his Superbike win. "The pressure has been on since the start of last season to take a win and now I have done it."

Jones, 21, was third in the Superbike opener behind Bugden and local star Andrew Stroud (Suzuki) before taking maximum points in the second ahead of his countryman.

With three rounds remaining, starting at Ruapuna this weekend, Bugden is on 95pts from Stroud (76), Jones (70) and Hayden Fitzgerald (Honda, 70).

In Supersport, Jones remains unbeaten after two rounds and is on a perfect 100pts, from Suzuki's James Smith (80) and Kawasaki's Nick Cole (58).
