Jett Lawrence wins 2025 AUSX Open

Jett Lawrence has claimed his first professional victory on Australian soil, taking out the 2025 AUSX Open crown in front of a packed Marvel Stadium. He beat reigning Australian Supercross champion Dean Wilson and his older brother, Hunter Lawrence.

Multi-time AMA champion Jett Lawrence (Honda) was largely unchallenged in the 2025 AUSX Open as he dominated the SX1 class at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium.

He set the tone with a blistering Superpole win, narrowly edging out older brother Hunter for the fastest lap, before backing it up with two commanding victories in the dual main events.

Forced to swap his factory Honda CRF450R for a near-production model, Lawrence didn’t get the best start in either race, but his trademark technique carried him to the front quickly on both occasions.

Scottish rider Dean Wilson (Honda) – the reigning Australian champion and current points leader –was consistent across both mains, while Hunter Lawrence battled poor starts to finish with a 5-2 scorecard and third overall.

Former Australian champion Matt Moss (Kawasaki) proved age is just a number, challenging both Lawrence brothers throughout the night to finish fourth overall. Frenchman Cédric Soubeyras (Honda) and Hayden Mellross (KTM) rounded out the top six.

The SX2 class brought far more drama, with points leader Lux Turner crashing out during qualifying and missing the main event.

Turner’s absence opened the door for his title rivals. American Cole Thompson (Yamaha) produced a 1-3 result to claim the overall win, though he remains out of title contention after missing the opening two rounds. Another American, Shane McElrath (Honda), returned after skipping the third round in Cronulla and finished second overall.

The biggest beneficiary of Turner’s crash was local favourite Ryder Kingsford (Yamaha), who finished third on the night and left Marvel with a 12-point lead in the championship.

No Australian rider has won an Australian Supercross title since Jay Wilson claimed the SX2 crown in 2018. Kingsford will hope to break that drought as he fights off closest rival Alex Larwood (Honda) at the final round in Adelaide this weekend, held as part of the Supercars Adelaide Grand Final.

While the Lawrence brothers have already returned to the United States to prepare for the 2026 AMA Supercross season, the remainder of the field will head to Adelaide for the AUSX Championship finale.

Dean Wilson holds a comfortable lead in the SX1 title race and needs only a steady performance to secure his second Australian championship. Soubeyras trails by 42 points but remains a mathematical chance, with 50 points still on offer.

The SX2 standings are far tighter, with Kingsford, Larwood, Turner, Rhys Budd (Kawasaki), Wilson Todd (Honda), and McElrath all still in contention.

Turner’s fitness for the final round remains uncertain, but Kingsford now sits in the box seat for his first national crown – and the first for any Australian rider since 2018.
