Jett Lawrence wins 2021 AMA Pro Motocross championship

The Queensland product is the first Australian to win an AMA title since Chad Reed in 2009

Jett Lawrence has claimed the AMA Pro Motocross 250 Class championship in just his second full season as a professional rider.

The Australian piloted his factory Honda CRF250R to an 8-3 result in the final round of the series at Hangtown in California, earning enough points to beat Yamaha’s Justin Cooper in the title race.

Lawrence made it hard for himself with a pair of poor starts and a few untimely falls, but he managed to fight back to claim the Gary Jones Cup for the 250 Class Championship.

“Oh my goodness, it’s a good day in the end,” Lawrence said. “I think that’s the worst I’ve ridden in a while, but I still got the title. It feels so great, as we’ve been working quite a while to get this.”

The Queenslander finished 6 points ahead of Cooper, with his older brother Hunter Lawrence finishing third in the title race.

Hailing from Landsborough, Queensland, the Lawrence brothers are two of the most exciting prospects in American motocross. The pair inked a deal with the Honda HRC factory team at the start of the year, and Jett also signed a coveted deal with Red Bull.

It has been a long road for the entire Lawrence family, who left Australia and moved to Europe in an attempt to further the boy’s careers. Hunter made a name for himself in the MX2 World Championship, while Jett had some success in the European Motocross Championship.

The family then travelled to the USA, where Hunter joined the famed Geico Honda squad. Jett soon followed, but with the demise of the Geico team at the end of 2020, Honda chose to establish a factory team in the 250 class with the Lawrence brothers as its star riders.

Both brothers have battled injuries and some inconsistent form, but they each took a big leap in 2021, fighting for the AMA Supercross 250 West and 250 East titles, and finishing 1st and 3rd in the Pro Motocross 250 championship.

Jett Lawrence is the first Australian to win a major motocross title in America since Chad Reed won the Pro Motocross 450 Class title in 2009.
