Jett Lawrence tightens grip on historic 2021 AMA Pro Motocross title

The Australian completed another dominant 250 Class performance, while Dylan Ferrandis claimed the 450 Class title

Australian motocross prodigy Jett Lawrence is just one race away from a history-making AMA Pro Motocross championship after another sterling performance at Fox Raceway.

Racing for the Honda factory outfit, Lawrence dominated the 250 Class, winning both motos to establish breathing space between him and his title rivals.

The Queenslander leads the 250 Class by 23 points ahead of the final round at Hangtown this weekend, with a total of 50 points still up for grabs. Just one more moto win at Hangtown will secure Lawrence the championship.

A win for Lawrence at the last round would represent the first major motocross or supercross title on US soil for an Australian rider since Chad Reed’s 2009 Pro Motocross 450 Class championship. Reed is the only Australian to win a championship at the highest level in the USA.

Lawrence has gone toe-to-toe with his closest rival Justin Cooper (Yamaha) all throughout the 2021 season, but the Aussie Honda pilot has the better recent form, winning the last four motos.

The top two cannot be overtaken in the championship, with Jett’s older brother and teammate Hunter sitting third, 92 points behind Cooper.

Dylan Ferrandis claimed the 450 Class championship with one round to spare

Meanwhile, Frenchman Dylan Ferrandis (Yamaha) claimed the 450 Class title at the penultimate round with a 1-2 result despite Eli Tomac (Kawasaki) winning the overall on a tiebreaker.

While Ferrandis cannot be caught, the battle for second is still on with Tomac sitting 9 points behind Honda rider Ken Roczen ahead of the final round.

Ferrandis’ title marks Yamaha’s first premier-class championship since Grant Langston's win in 2007.
