It’s not an event for the faint hearted. The Wildwood Rock Extreme will be held on Sunday, November 10 near Sunbury (Vic), with British star Graham Jarvis returning to try and make it win number two against a blockbuster line-up which includes Husaberg factory teammate Alfredo Gomez and Australia’s defending champion Matt Phillips (Husqvarna).
Numbers have doubled for the torturous event in 2013, as riders from the local enduro, moto trials and motocross scenes try their luck in the new format.
Jarvis, a five-time British moto trials champion, made the switch to enduro in 2007 and has gone on to win some of biggest events such as the Red Bull Romaniacs, Red Bull Sea to Sky, Hells Gate and Erzberg. Jarvis also won the Wildwood Rock enduro in 2011 and lapped the whole field in the process!
“I loved coming to Australia last time as it was a whole new experience and challenge. But I’m sure it will be harder to win this time,” said the 38-year-old who hails from Ripon in North Yorkshire.
Jarvis’s 24-year-old teammate Gómez finished second at Wildwood in 2012 behind Phillips.
Phillips returns to Wildwood as Australia’s newest world champion after winning the junior enduro title in September.
Other well known faces to look out for this year from Australia are Mitch Harper, Peter Boyle, Tim Coleman, Tom Scott, and in the newly added women’s Jessica Gardiner and Kristie McKinnon.
Harper, 21, won the inaugural event in 2010 then set the fastest prologue time in 2012 before failing to finish. His is just returning to racing after fracturing his T7 and T12 vertebrae in a practice crash in April this year.
Event organiser Steve Braszell said this year’s event will be better than ever.
“We have more classes, more prizemoney up for grabs and a bigger and better course that will keep the crowd gasping for more. It’s a great day out for everyone really and runs rain hail or shine,” Braszell said.
The Wildwood Rock Extreme will commence from 9:00am with a 1km prologue course of man-made items.
At 11:00am the three-hour main event kicks off on a man-made track with rocks, hills, water holes, barrels and other ‘interesting’ objects that you would never dream about riding two wheels over.
The location is 227 Feehans Road, Wildwood. Entry is $20 for adults, $10 for ages 10-16, and free for under 10s.
