British extreme enduro specialist Graham Jarvis has taken the sword to the world’s best off-road riders by claiming an emphatic victory in the 2012 Red Bull Romaniacs, held in Romania from June 14-17.
The ‘hard-enduro’, held over four days and 600km of trails across the Carpathian Mountains, is a technical acid test of the highest order, and once again the Husaberg-mounted Jarvis took it all in his stride to win by nearly 44 minutes ahead of German Andreas Lettenbichler (Husqvarna).
Jarvis now joins Frenchman Cyril Despres on three Romaniacs wins, and has already confirmed he'll be back in 2013 to try and make it four.
Jarvis, who won the Wildwood Enduro in Victoria last year, completed the course in 19 hours, three minutes and 46 seconds (19.03:46), with Lettenbichler finishing on 19.47:43. Briton Jonny Walker (KTM) was third (20.12:08), well clear of New Zealander Chris Birch (KTM, 20.25:19) in fourth.
Walker, who won this year’s prologue, now goes down as the youngest placegetter in the event’s history, while 2012 was Birch’s first year off the podium in four years. Birch won the event in 2010.
Despite the level of difficulty increasing over the four days – as energy levels were dropping -- 80 percent of the riders completed the event thanks to friendly weather conditions, with Australian Dean Nuttall second in the expert division after leading for the first three days.
2013 will be the 10th anniversary of the Red Bull Romaniacs.
