Could the four big Japanese motorcycle manufacturers be ready to flick the switch for serious, high-volume electric bike production?
News coming out of Japan at the moment could just be the circuit-breaker to make that that happen, with Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasaki now considering a unified standard for batteries, charging stations and other facilities.

Sources also suggest the four marques will set up a consultative body to discuss details about a unified standard, in a move which is designed to prevent different approaches being taken, particularly in regards to charging stations.
Over the last decade, the Japanese brands have been active in the electric space with a number of prototypes, concepts and even competition bikes (look at all the links above and below!), but will the proposed new spirit of collaboration between the big four solidify and even fast-track plans to increase their presence in the electric space over the next few years? At least domestically, as a starting point. We'll be following this story with intense interest.
