The lumbering beast that is the GFC continues on its gloomy way, with recent figures showing that motorcycle production in Japan dropped by 22.2 per cent in May, when 41,334 motorcycles rolled off the Big Four's production lines -- that's down 11,771 units over the corresponding figure for May 2011. The figures were released today by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association.
Within that number it's the mopeds and ultra-small-commuters that have been hit hardest, with production of bikes of 50cc or under effectively halving. Production of bikes over 250cc was down by 12.5 per cent, while production of bikes between 126cc and 250cc were up, by an impressive 32.1 per cent.
Domestic bike sales in Japan in May remained virtually static -- a tiny increase of 0.2 per cent was recorded.
Among the Big Four manufacturers, it was Honda leading the way with 13,875 bikes produced, followed by Yamaha (12,151 units), Suzuki (9776 units) and Kawasaki (5532 units).
