Here’s a picture of the Yoshimura Suzuki GS1000R (aka XR69) that garrulous New Zealander Graeme Crosby rode to victory in the 1980 Suzuka 8-Hour alongside American Wes Cooley.
Yes, it’s an image alright – but of a scale version of the actual bike, as seen in the annual Modeler GP in Japan, a competition for scale models of racing motorcycles.
The standard of the models is absolutely mind-blowing, so much so that it does take quite a while to realise that you’re looking at something which is only about 25cm long.
Every little part of the XR69 is faithfully reproduced in the scale model, down to tyre wear marks and suspension internals. Phenomenal.
But that’s enough platitudes from us – take a look at the Modeler GP website yourself, which is only in Japanese but the words are secondary to the images. And it will give you some idea how big the model scene is over there, thanks to companies like Tamiya. The XR69 is but one of dozens of models on the site, and other bikes include Wayne Gardner’s 1989 Honda NSR500 and Mick Doohan’s 1988 Suzuka 8-Hour Yamaha YZF750, both entrants in the 2004 Modeler GP.
