The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association Inc recently released manufacturing and export data for its car and motorcycle manufacturers for the month of September, 2012, plus the equivalent year-to-date figures to the end of June 2012 – and a mixed bag of results it is.
Automobile production (encompassing passenger cars, trucks and buses) in September was down by 12.4 per cent (773,990 units produced) compared to September 2011, while motorcycle production was down by 19.1 percent (46,509 units produced). The figures for the first half of 2012 were positive for the automobile industry, but not so for the bike industry. The 4,906,628 automobiles produced from January through June 2012 represented impressive growth of 25.7 per cent over the first half of 2011, while the 264,553 motorcycles produced in the same period represented a drop of 16 per cent – a downturn after three consecutive years of growth.
Automobile exports for the six months stood at 2,367,260 – an increase of 19.4 per cent – while the 210,856 motorcycles exported represented a drop of 4.9 per cent.
