Japan: 2012 in review

The Japan Automobile Association has released its overview on the country's motor vehicle and motorcycle industries, with a broad range of data across key areas

Australia is the fifth biggest export market for Japanese-manufactured motorcycles, according to The Motor Industry of Japan report – the yearly overview of the Japanese motor vehicle and motorcycle industries.

A total of 30,924 motorcycles made in Japan were exported to Australia in 2012, behind only America (166,601), France (41,659), Brazil (31,875) and Germany (30,925). Overall, motorcycle exports in 2012 declined 5.1 per cent from the previous year to 479,000 units – but there was a 7.3 per cent increase to Oceania, with Australia accounting for 88 per cent of them.

Other motorcycle data showed that:

  • Overall domestic motorcycle production in Japan decreased 6.8 per cent in 2012 compared to the previous year. A total of 595,000 motorcycles were manufactured, with the over 250ccc class growing but contraction hitting the other segments: 50cc and under, 51-125cc and 126-250cc. Production peaked at 2.947,672 in 1970;
  • Domestic motorcycle sales (defined as ex-factory shipments to domestic dealers, not as new registrations) in 2012 totalled 402,000 units, down 0.9 per cent from the previous year. In 1980, sales peaked at 2,370,036;
  • A total of 11.99 million motorcycles are in use in Japan, from a pool of about 19 million licence holders. In 1985 there were just over 18 million motorcycles in use; and
  • The geographical distribution of Japanese automakers’ overseas production bases shows that there are 51 motorcycle facilities outside of Japan, and five that produce both motor vehicles and motorcycles. There are eight motorcycle-only bases in China alone, followed by India, Indonesia, Philippines and Thailand on four apiece.
