James Toseland becomes a Doctor

But rules out a move into full-time academia

The motorcycle racing world now has two Doctors - Valentino Rossi and James Toseland.

While the irrepressible Rossi is universally known under "The Doctor" moniker, Toseland has just collected an honorary doctorate from Sheffield Hallam University that gives him the legal right to use the term "Doctor".

Just how many of his opponents in next year's world superbike title use the honorific remains to be seen.

The Bikesales Network isn't sure what the doctorate is for, but we're tipping it's for services to motorcycling, or perhaps he's produced a bionic ear in his spare time?

"To be here and recognised by the city and Sheffield Hallam is possibly the most humbling thing I've ever received," said Toseland. "It's a great honour and the icing on the cake for me after winning two championships and hopefully another next year."

Doncaster-born racer James became world superbike champion at just 23 (in 2003), and doubled up four years later.

After two hapless years in MotoGP, Toseland will return to the world superbike title in 2010 on a Yamaha.
