Honda’s Jacob Smith has won the first big event to kick off desert racing season in Australia – the Condo 750.
The April 12-14 event in Condobolin (NSW) saw Smith claim a nerveless four-minute and 19-second victory over brother and 2012 winner Todd, both riding CRF450Xs. The two remaining big guns in the event, Rod Faggotter (Yamaha WR450F) and Matt Fish (KTM 450SX-F), were third and fourth -- the top four separated by just over 11 minutes.
Thrilled with his second Condo 750 win, Jacob said: “A big thanks to the team for delivering another great bike on Friday. It makes it easier when the bike just turns up before the race and we can go out and win again.”
Meanwhile, the weekend started promisingly for Faggotter – Australia’s highest finisher in the 2013 Dakar Rally -- when he finished second in the prologue, but in stage one he ran over some wire which caught up in his front wheel and front brakes. He had no option but to stop and pull the wire from the front of his machine and then continue the chase. He then sped off in pursuit, only to fall from his bike in stage two after hitting something in the long grass.
Fifty-five of the 67 riders completed the event.
Next up on the off-road calendar is the Finke Desert Race, which will be held on the Queen’s birthday long weekend. For more information, visit www.finkedesertrace.com.au.
