Australia's most successful racing identity, Sir Jack Brabham, has died. He was aged 88.
Brabham won 14 grands prix and three F1world championships, both feats that remain records for Australians.
Most famously, Brabham's third world title was achieved in a car of his own construction and powered by an Australian-designed and built Repco engine.
Brabham rose from being a speedway racer in Sydney to conquering international motor racing's highest category. He raced against the likes of Juan Manuel Fangio and Sir Stirling Moss. Later, in his heyday, Brabham raced with the great Scotsmen, Jim Clark and Sir Jackie Stewart.
Brabham began a dynasty that continues today. His sons, Geoffrey and David, both count Le Mans 24 hour sports car race wins among many achievements. Sir Jack's grandsons, Matthew and Sam, are currently winning open-wheeler races in the USA and Britain.
