Iron Butt conquered!

From Melbourne to Silverton return, all in a day's work

On December 5-6, Bikesales successfully completed our latest adventure – the ‘SaddleSore 1000’, which saw three of us ride luxury tourers from Melbourne to Silverton return in the space of 24 hours. We’ve burnt the candle at both ends before – Le Minz 24-hour scootherthons – but nothing like this…

The ‘1000’ part refers to 1000 miles (or 1610km), and we not only hit that marker but even managed to eke out a few more kilometres as we made our way back to our starting point at a service station just north of Melbourne.

We signed off at 2:00am on Wednesday, after hitting the road from the same locale at 4:45am on Tuesday on our three steeds: a Harley-Davidson Ultra Limited, Honda Goldwing and Indian Roadmaster.

The 21 hours and 15 minutes in between saw us make it to Silverton, in far west NSW, for a late lunch, and then turn around and do it all over again. And in perfect weather for long-haul work as well: mid 20s, sunny and benign conditions. At least during the day part…

Why? We’ve already explained the inspiration for the ride, and now we’re working on encapsulating the adventure into words, images and video. Keep an eye out for that, where we’ll also name the best luxury tourer in a crack field of long distance masters.

And once that’s done, we’ll submit all the required paperwork to the internet-based Iron Butt Association for official SaddleSore 1000 ratification.
