Introducing BMW’s G 310 and eRR superbike

Two all-new BMW models lost amid the Milan Show hype could see the German brand entering two new burgeoning market segments.

Unveiled just days before the Milan motorcycle expo flung open its doors, BMW whipped the covers of its long-rumoured small-capacity nakedbike as well as an electric-powered version of its S 1000 RR superbike.

Prefaced by a stunt version shown months ago and built in conjunction with Indian company TVS, the new 158kg BMW G310 is powered by a 313cc reverse-cylinder single which is claimed to be slightly more powerful than its Japanese rivals.

The reverse-cylinder engine, employed to create a longer swingarm, is mounted in a tubular-steel frame with a lightweight aluminium swingarm. The bike is equipped with upside-down forks and the radial-mounted front calipers are complemented by the ABS system.

While the G310 will shortly be gunning for a decent slice of the LAMS market, BMW’s electric superbike dubbed the eRR is purely a prototype at this stage. Proving, however, the firm is serious about the alternative technology, the electric superbike follows on the heels of the i3 and i8 four-wheeled electric and hybrid vehicles, both of which received high praise.

Because of its prototype status, BMW hasn’t revealed any specifics surrounding the battery or motor, but it did say it is capable of accelerating up to 60km/h faster than its petrol-guzzling counterpart. Watch this space.
