Motorcyclists from all over will be heading for the Australian Motorcycle Expo Melbourne in late November, but some will have travelled further than others. Take husband-and-wife duo Simon and Lisa Thomas (pictured), for example – they set out from their home in Britain in May of 2003, and since then they’ve covered 382,000km through some 77 countries, with a further 45 nations still to be added to the tally!
Riding a BMW R 1150 GS and F 650 GS, the pair plan to break two Guinness World Records while they’re here in Australia – the longest journey by motorcycle in a single country, and the longest continuous journey by motorcycle within a single country. They’re also using their global exploits to raise money for three charities, namely World Water Aid, The British Heart Foundation and CancerBACUP.
The pair will be dropping in to the Australian Motorcycle Expo Melbourne to share their stories – you can find them at the BMW Motorrad and Touratech stands – and from surviving water crises in Africa to Simon breaking his neck in the Amazon, you can rest assured there will be plenty of tales to tell.
For anyone inspired by the Thomas’s travels and gripped by wanderlust themselves, there will be a number of renowned motorcycle travel organisations in attendance at the Australian Motorcycle Expo Melbourne, which will be held at the Victorian capital’s Convention and Exhibition Centre over November 23-25.
Businesses like Globebusters Motorcycle Expeditions, BMW GS and TS Safaris (by BMW Australia), Compass Expeditions, Borneo Biking Adventures, Fair Dinkum Bike Tours and Timor Adventures will all be there, ready to tailor rides of a lifetime to your budget, time frame, experience and sense of adventure.
