Monday June 20 is the official International Ride To Work Day, which is a day when all motorcyclists and scooterists are encouraged to ride to work.
Endorsed by the FIM, or Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme if you will, the day is intended to highlight the reduced impact that motorcycles have on several fronts - such as traffic congestion, carbon dioxide emissions and even state of mind.
The day is also a big show of support for motorcyclists and scooterists and has the potential to send a powerful message to policy makers and governments right across the globe.
On average, motorcycles and scooter uses less fuel than cars, around half as much, so there's also a powerful economic argument there.
It is the 20th anniversary of the International Ride To Work Day, an initiative that originated in the USA and has grown in a worldwide phenomenon, and according to the FIM it showcases several positive principles.
The FIM issued a press statement that reads: "Riding to work on this day showcases the positive value of motorcycles and scooters for transportation. It is an economical, efficient and socially responsible form of mobility that saves energy, reduces traffic congestion and provides a broad range of other public benefits. Motorcycle and scooter enthusiasts and FIM National Federations worldwide are encouraging their members to ride to work on this day."
Plenty of motorcycle manufacturers have jumped on board as well, with UK-bsaed Triumph saying that "By taking part in National Ride to Work Day on 20th June 2011, you’ll encourage others to ride too."
If you don't have a motorcycle or scooter, maybe you know someone who does, and you could always ride as a pillion passenger to show your support.
