In response to concerns over air pollution, Taiwan aims to phase out fuel-powered motorcycles by 2035, according to a report in www.xinhuanet.com.
And cars will follow five years later, with the island beginning to install thousands of charging stations as the process of de-fuelling kicks off in earnest.
The report says that Taiwan currently has the highest density of motorcycles in the world, with 14 million on the road in a population roughly the size of Australia’s.
Currently, there are 1800 charging stations for electric motorcycles installed in Taiwan, and the new facilities commissioned at the start of 2018 will bring the total to around 5000.
Other incentives to switch to electric motorcycles include subsidies, special license plates, dedicated parking lots and parking discounts.
One million motorcycles were sold in 2017 with just 40,000 of them electric.
