Intermot show: Suzuki V-Strom 650XT

The evolution of Suzuki's V-Strom adventure bike family continues with the public premiere of the V-Strom 650XT
Suzuki has unveiled a revised and harder-edged version of its popular middleweight adventure bike, with the new V-Strom 650XT revealed yesterday at the Intermot show in Cologne, Germany, sporting spoked rims and sharper styling.
The new model will be sold alongside the existing V-Strom 650 in both its standard and LAMS-approved guises.

The new model receives a front 'beak' akin to that of the latest-generation V-Strom 1000 introduced earlier this year, plus DID spoked alloy wheels. The latter are lighter than the existing model's alloy rims and can generally be repaired if damaged – an important aspect for adventure riders looking to tackle rougher off-road trips.

The V-Strom 650XT will, however, still come fitted with non-switchable anti-lock brakes.
Retaining the model's fuel-injected, 645cc, 90-degree V-twin engine and its existing aluminium twin-spar frame and swingarm, in Australian specification the V-Strom 650XT will come fitted with factory hand-guards, a plastic belly pan and engine crash bars.
New hard panniers and a new topbox will complement the model's list of genuine accessories, which also includes a touring screen, LED fog lamps, a centrestand, a 12-volt auxiliary power outlet and an aluminium chain guard.
Suzuki quotes a wet weight of 215kg and a seat heat of 835mm for the model, which is mechanically unchanged from the existing V-Strom 650.
Suzuki is producing the V-Strom 650XT in Mat Fibroin Grey, Pearl Bracing White, Metallic Triton Blue and Candy Daring Red.
According to Suzuki Australia's Marketing Manager Motorcycles, Lewis Croft, Australia will get its first glimpse of the V-Strom 650XT in October.
"We hope to have one to display at the Australian MotoGP round," he said.
"The hand-guards, belly pan and crash bars to be fitted to the Australian-spec model will add up to about $850-worth of extras, while we expect the model will go on sale for only a modest price premium."
Suzuki Australia says the model is expected to reach Australian dealerships in January 2015; pricing and full details will be confirmed closer to the model's local release.
