Intermot show: Ducati SuperSport and SuperSport S

It’s real-world usability over bragging rights with Ducati’s all-new SuperSport

In what’s a swing back to the original sportstourer, Ducati whipped the covers off both a standard and up-spec version of its all-new SuperSport in Cologne overnight.

Powered by the firm’s 937cc four-valve 11° Testastretta engine from its Hypermotard 939 and bolted into a signature trellis sportsbike frame, it’s the upright ergonomics and lack of high-end and race-targeted electronics that has allowed the Italian brand to carve itself yet another audience.

There’s not much separating the two, suspension and the addition of a quickshifter the only differences between the two specs sheets, both boasting a kerb weight of 210kg a seat height of 810mm, a tank capacity of 16 litres and a wheelbase of 1478mm.

Power is quoted at 113hp (83kW) which is tuned to chime in far earlier than its track-focussed Panigale-branded siblings at 9000rpm. And while torque peaks at 6500rpm, Ducati says that 80 percent of the almost 97Nm of oomph is available at or before 3000rpm.

The base model uses a fully adjustable 41mm Marzocchi/Sachs suspension set-up while the up-spec S model gains a fully adjustable 48mm Öhlins fork matched to a Öhlins shock at the rear also boasting full adjustability. Both variants get a two-way adjustable screen, both are endowed with the same twin-disc radial-mounted Monobloc Brembo braking affair and both come equipped with ABS as standard fitment.

In terms of electronics, as well as ABS it’s the switchable riding and power modes as well as Ducati’s traction control system.

The Panigale family resemblance is instantly recognisable at the front with the LED daytime running light, both options boast the full-colour TFT instruments as well and underseat USB outlet while the S model comes with a rear seat cowl to cover the pillion seat when not in use.

As well as an accessories catalogue brimming with all the trimmings (including Akrapovic under-seat pipes to replace the 2-1-2 stacked jobbies), Ducati has two pre-packed accessory hampers to choose to either make your sportstourer either more sporty or more tourer.

The Sport pack comes with a carbon-fibre tank cover and front guard, racing levers and master cylinder covers machined from billet aluminium. The Touring pack contains panniers, a larger windshield and heated grips.

The Ducati SuperSport is slated for arrival in Aussie dealerships in March 2017; local pricing for both variants will be announced closer to their on-sale date.
