BMW has officially welcomed two new members to its family of Boxer-engined bikes, with the German marque debuting its 2015 R 1200 R and R 1200 RS at the Intermot show.
The naked R 1200 R and faired R 1200 RS both feature the water-cooled Boxer engine found in the R 1200 GS adventure bike and R 1200 RT tourer, the flat-twin said to be good for 125hp (92kW) at 7750rpm and 125Nm at 6500rpm. They also share a new tubular steel bridge frame, the latter utilising the engine as a stressed member.
BMW Motorrad Australia has confirmed the latest evolution of the R 1200 R will reach our shores with a Comfort Package and Dynamic Package as standard. The Comfort Package comprises BMW's RDC tyre pressure monitoring system, a chrome exhaust and heated handlebar grips, while the Dynamic Package includes white LED indicators, a sports screen, DRLs (LED daytime running lights) and Riding Mode Pro.
The latter adds BMW's Dynamic Traction Control and two extra ride modes ('Dynamic' and 'User') to the bike's standard 'Road' and 'Rain' modes. Anti-lock brakes and stability control are standard features.
The options list will span Dynamic Electronic Suspension Adjustment, a Touring Package, keyless ignition, a quick shifter and more.
The sportstouring R 1200 RS, meanwhile, adds an adjustable half-fairing with twin headlights to the same basic recipe. A similar array of electronic goodies will be available for the RS but Australian specifications are still to be announced.
The naked bike weighs in at 231kg (wet) while the sportstourer adds a further 5kg; standard seat heights for the siblings are 790mm and 820mm respectively.
The BMW R 1200 R is expected to reach Aussie showrooms around February or March of next year, while the R 1200 RS will follow four or so months later. Pricing for both models will be confirmed closer to their local release.
